Mangold Braille Reading Program
for Young Readers
Ages 5-12

Readiness for Reading and Learning Braille Letters teach the initial skills that promote rapid efficient braille reading. Learning to read braille is fun! Each lesson ends with an exciting game that reinforces the skills being learned and adds fun and enjoyment to demonstrate no confusion when identifying letters that are similar or are reversible pairs. Mastering the braille alphabet is basic to rapid, error free reading. Many pages may be used for initial instruction and others may be used as follow-up exercises. SAL2 gives instant feedback that allows the student to correct identification errors quickly before they become hard-to-break habits.

Learning Braille Contractions is designed to teach reading skills to new readers who already know the braille alphabet. All exercises are controlled for contractions. Reading and writing exercises are included on nearly every sheet. Assessment sheets at the end of each level test the student's mastery of the contractions learned and to evaluate the student’s readiness to move to the next level.

The skills that are presented in this program should be introduced to the student by a certified teacher of the visually impaired. The books in this series should be completed in numeric order as indicated by the number in each title.

The record keeping software tracks each student’s performance and provides a teacher report on individual student activities and student progress.

The Teacher’s Guide includes a print copy of the content of each braille worksheet and the spoken directions students hear as they use the lesson.

Also included is the Teacher’s Guide on CD for use with screen readers.

Book 1: Readiness for Reading Braille

• Is designed to reduce the possibility of letter reversal confusion.
• Includes criterion tests with follow-up braille worksheets.
• Teaches letter recognition and letter tracking in 121 pages.

Book 3: Learning Braille Contractions - Levels 1 through 5

• Are controlled for contractions.
• Introduce numbers and punctuation.
• Include activities with multiple choice questions, sentence tracking, fill in the blank and writing exercises.
• Reading and writing exercises are included.
• Include multiple readings of passages to help promote fluency and speed.
• Include trade books with voiced picture descriptions.
• Assessment sheets at the end of each level test student mastery of contractions learned.
