In Memory
Dr. Sally Mangold

Sally S. Mangold, Ph.D.
1935 - 2005

Dr. Sally Mangold taught blind and visually impaired students for 16 years. She then trained teachers of the visually impaired at San Francisco State University for 18 years. Her dozens of books, articles and videos help teachers, parents and those who want to lend a helping hand. She is best known for the "Mangold Developmental Program of Tactual Perception and Letter Recognition". The teacher's manual has been translated into seven languages and used around the world.

Sally and her husband, Phil Mangold, co-founded Exceptional Teaching Aids, in 1974. They began by offering products for children and adults who were blind and visually impaired and over the years expanded to include products for those with special needs.

Sally used her imagination and creativity to combine technology and the Mangold teaching method in an effort to offer an uncomplicated and rewarding system of teaching and learning braille. The SAL2 System is a friendly, fun and effective way to learn and practice braille.

I had the opportunity of working with Sally for many years and grew to know her not only as a wonderful leader in this field but also as a dear friend. We traveled and worked together worldwide as Sally elegantly promoted her message of empowerment and independence through braille literacy. We are devoted to continuing this message and make available her work through Exceptional Teaching’s products and through the continuation of SAL. She is missed by her many friends and colleagues from around the world, but her presence and her contribution to the field continues.
