Braille Codes and Calculations was written and Dot Writing was updated by Mary Ellen Pesavento in response to many requests for an easy-to-use, yet effective method of learning the Braille codes. Although sold separately, Braille Codes and Calculations and Dot Writing are designed to be used together. Dot Writing includes a systematic introduction to Standard English Braille plus practice words and sentences.
Braille Codes and Calculations is a 362-page volume that covers what is usually two semesters of study at the university level. It teaches the entire literary Braille code, the Nemeth code of mathematics - symbols and formats appropriate for students through the sixth grade, and an introduction to the Braille codes of music, computers, and foreign language. A unique aspect of Braille Codes and Calculations is that it includes self-correcting exercises, examples illustrating effective ways of transcribing print worksheets, and lessons showing how to teach the use of the Braille slate and stylus. A helpful list of tricky to transcribe words appears in the appendices. Guidelines for teaching signature writing to children with visual impairments are included as a nice bonus.
You will find using Braille Codes and Calculations, combined with Dot Writing, extremely useful. Some teachers have found that Literary Braille Practice Sentences makes a useful companion to these two volumes.
